The ‘Manrique Universe’ invades Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
The Atlantic Center of Modern Art (CAAM) has inaugurated the exhibition ‘Universe Manrique’, dedicated to the work and the figure of the conejero artist César Manrique (1919-1992) whose work of international transcendence has been marked in his native island and in the story of the History of Art of the twentieth century in the Canary Islands and Spain.
The exhibition is displayed along the four floors and the façade of the main headquarters of the art center, and can be visited from March 28 to September 29, during the regular hours of the center, from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. 9 pm and Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, with free admission.
This is the most outstanding show of the program for this year 2019, marked by the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the CAAM and the commemoration of the centenary of the birth of Manrique. A project framed in the essential lines of work of CAAM to review and disseminate the trajectory of fundamental artists of the contemporary art of the Canary Islands.
The exhibition is curated by art historian and critic, Katrin Steffen, who has worked, among others, at the Kunstmuseum in Basel or at the Daros Latin Collection in Zurich and Rio de Janeiro, for more than a decade.
Universe Manrique aims to show the many facets of this total artist, interested in an art dedicated to life. César Manrique was not only a qualified professional painter, self-taught architect, landscaper, designer and sculptor, but he also worked as mediator, precursor, promoter and entrepreneur, educator and social and environmental activist.
