The Lanzarote Island Award 2019 goes to the easyJet airline

The jury of the Lanzarote Island and Distinguished Tourism Awards granted by the Cabildo de Lanzarote through Turismo Lanzarote, composed of representatives of public and private entities that make up the Lanzarote Foreign Promotion Society (SPEL), unanimously agreed, in the session of the Board of Directors of this entity held on Friday, granting the 2019 Island of Lanzarote Award to the easyJet airline.

According to the jury, easyJet is deserving of this highest distinction and the greatest public recognition due to its “determined commitment to the destination Lanzarote, becoming in recent years a very important tourist agent for the island with the opening of new routes so sustained, even in periods of uncertainty as the sector currently lives internationally. ”

In this context, it should be noted that easyJet currently maintains connections between César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport and London Gatwick Airport, London Luton, London Southend, Manchester, Liverpool, Belfast, Bristol, Berlin Schönefeld, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Bordeaux, Milan Malpensa, Venice, Amsterdam and Basel. The British airline has increased this year, compared to 2018, from 15 to 19 direct flights with the island during the summer season and from 26 to 35 in the winter season.

Distinguished Tourism 2019

On the other hand, the jury agreed to grant the 2019 Distinguished Tourism awards to Club La Santa, in the Company category; to Lanzarote International Marathon, in the Event, Cultural and / or Sports Events category; and Victoriano Elvira Guillén, in the Personality category.

Club La Santa is considered one of the best sports hotels in Europe and is the cradle of one of the most important events worldwide, the Ironman Lanzarote. It also carries out other relevant tests such as the Ironman 70.3, the Lanzarote International Running Challenge or the 4 Stage Mountain Bike. Located in the municipality of Tinajo, it hosts a high number of athletes throughout the year, many of them elite. Its clients are very aware tourists since their arrival with the condition of Biosphere Reserve of the island, for which they show great environmental respect.

Lanzarote International Marathon, with 28 editions held, has become a consolidated sports event, attracting hundreds of participants from numerous countries. Co-organized by Sands Beach Active and the Cabildo de Lanzarote, with the collaboration of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Town Halls of Teguise, Arrecife, San Bartolomé and Tías, this test has placed Lanzarote on the international map of marathons contributing significantly to the projection Lanzarote tourism linked to sports.

Victoriano Elvira Guillén, an important promoter of the hospitality sector and a great promoter of the island tourism industry, started in the hospitality industry from a very young age and has a long and recognized career in the sector. Linked in its beginnings to the emblematic Hotel Los Fariones, it has run or directed establishments referring to the island such as Barracuda Restaurants, Las Vistas, Las Vegas or the Bagatela Bar.

Special mentions

The jury also agreed to grant three special Mentions to the book Bodegas El Grifo, to the book “The Volcano of Tourism, origins of the transformation of Lanzarote”, by Juan Cruz Sepúlveda and to the restorer José Luis Guillén Berriel.
