Lanzarote prepares a year full of tributes to César Manrique to celebrate his centenary

The Castillo de San José International Museum of Contemporary Art was the setting for the presentation of a part of the program of activities designed by the Cabildo de Lanzarote, in collaboration with the Government of the Canary Islands, to commemorate the centenary of the birth of the artist, born on 24 April 1919

Precisely on April 24, 2019, at 12:00 hours, the Auditorio de los Jameos del Agua will host the institutional act with which the program will start. On the night of that day will take place on the beach of El Reducto (Arrecife) the first of the 24 musical performances that will take place over eleven days in the so-called ‘Manrique Stage’ which will be uploaded by some 300 artists.

This series of performances will begin with the show ‘The Illusion of César’, by the company Laboratorio Escénico – which has produced the shows ‘Pieles’ and ‘Ángora’ – and will have the finishing touch on Sunday, May 5 with the performance of Los Sabandeños, Los Gofiones and Acatife. In this section also highlights the concert offered by the Orchestra and Choir of the Symphony of Las Palmas that will perform the play ‘Carmina Burana’, coordinated by the tenor Lanzarote Pancho Corujo.

The program also includes editorial, educational projects, as well as related to tourism, the Environment, the performing arts, exhibitions and other dissemination activities that will be made public in the coming weeks.

Among the exhibitions stand out the exhibition project ‘100 years: Lanzarote and César’, coordinated by José Betancort, Mario Ferrer, Alejandro Kravietz and Juan Gopar, which will be held in El Almacén, La Casa Amarilla and MIAC Castillo de San José; and that will travel the islands by an agreement with all the Cabildos until April 2020, which will bring the figure of the artist and the evolution of Lanzarote in the last century to all the citizens of the Canary Islands.

They also highlight the audiovisual project dedicated to the artist entitled ‘Entre Islas’, by Ildefonso Aguilar, which will be reproduced in the Buñuel Room in El Almacén; as well as the publication of publications such as ‘Paisaje y César’ by Fernando Castro, promoted in collaboration with the Parliament of the Canary Islands, or the reprint of the biographies of César Manrique, made by Violeta Izquierdo and Fernando Castro himself. He also highlighted “the commitment” of Televisión Canaria to broadcast the documentaries ‘Taro, the echo of Manrique’ and ‘Las manos’.
