A total of 1,450 students will participate in the current school year in the educational project ‘Guardians of the Territory’, which aims to encourage among the youngest the knowledge and respect of the environment, as well as create roots and identity with the island territory.

The writer Mayte Pozo, as author of the material that is distributed among the students participating in this project – belonging to 26 centers of Infant, Primary and Secondary education of the island – presented the contents of the twelve teaching units of which it consists and which address the agriculture, livestock, the sea and the Lanzarote landscape.

As explained, each participant receives a card that accredits him as ‘Guardian of the Territory’ in one of these four areas, immediately joining one of the four teams in charge of protecting and caring for the island from each of the areas mentioned.

“To take care of the environment that surrounds us it is important to know it very well, and for this the students will have four guides, authentic teachers who will teach them interesting things about this unique place where we live,” said Mayte Pozo.

These fiction guides are called Adislan (a farmer, and a nod to social inclusion as its name corresponds to the acronym of the Association of People with Disabilities of Lanzarote), Bernabeee (a goat), Cinderella (a shearwater) and Canariensis (a palm tree), and are responsible for highlighting the values of each of the areas they represent: the peasantry, livestock, the sea, and the landscape and island biodiversity, respectively.
