Next Thursday February 7 will be the presentation of the bilingual book written by the English journalist Larry Yaskiel published under the title ‘The British Connection to Lanzarote and the Canaries’ / ‘The British Connection with Lanzarote and Canary Islands’, which will host the tourist resort of Playa Blanca at the Natura Palace hotel located in the Montaña Roja area.

It is a description of more than fifty historical sets linked to the commercial, social, cultural and political relations between these two archipelagos neighboring the Atlantic that Yaskiel recorded in 254 pages after consulting, among others, prominent archives such as the British Museum, the Library British National or the National Library of Ireland since the eighties of the last century. The work published under the Ediciones Remotas seal has the institutional support of the Yaiza City Council.

The author’s theory is novel because it establishes the first common bridge between the British and the Canaries since the Norman conquest of the Canaries in 1402, starting with Lanzarote. The union is not only established because the Normans had conquered the English crown several centuries before (in 1066 William, Duke of Normandy, invaded England crowned as William I) but because with Jean Bethencourt and Gadifer de la Salle (conquerors of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura for the crown of Castile) also came several English gentlemen.

After this initial connection, Larry Yaskiel describes in his book how the following centuries were marked by the rivalry between England and Spain in the control of routes and business with America, in such a way that there were several naval attacks that the Canary Islands suffered at the hands of of English navigators. The enchanted journalist will not only share his investigative experience and the result of the same compiled in the book at Playa Blanca, but will also address the concerns of the attending public.

A lover of music and Lanzarote

For more than twenty years, Larry Yaskiel (London, 1936) was dedicated to the music industry and worked as a top executive for major international labels, with rock stars such as Jimi Hendrix, Supertramp, The Who, Eric Clapton, Deep Purple or Bee Gees.

In 1979, a vacation in Lanzarote led him to change his life. He settled on the island and from then on he dedicated himself to edit and write a cultural magazine for visitors and English residents in the Canary Islands. Lancelot Island Journal is one of the oldest publications in English in Spain and has served for Yaskiel to develop an exemplary role as ambassador of the Canary Islands to Great Britain.
