The Engraving Online exhibition can already be visited at the Cabildo de Lanzarote headquarters, a show organized by the insular institution that brings to light a very significant part of the collection of engravings that the corporation owns, and that are part of the funds of the International Museum of Contemporary Art-Castillo de San José.

The exhibition brings together works by six artists of national and international renown, of which four of them are national prizes of Plastic Arts, as is the case of Juan Muñoz, José Manuel Broto, Cristina Iglesias, Susana Solano, who also have to add two other consecrated artists, such as the Portuguese artist Pedro Cabrita Reis and the Canarian painter Gonzalo González. The selection of works and artists has been made by the curator of the exhibition, Estefanía Camejo.

All the works were also made in Lanzarote, since they were executed in the 90s of the last century in the Taller Line, an engraving workshop promoted by galleries Jorge Marsá and Dora Castillo located in Puerto del Carmen.

The Line Workshop in Lanzarote

In the mid-eighties of the last century, Dora Castillo and Jorge Marsá created the Line Gallery in Madrid, specializing in the edition and exhibition of work on paper: drawings, engravings and monotypes. Since 1987, Línea carries out an intense work related to the edition and production of engraving in its workshop, positioning itself as one of the reference spaces associated with the field of graphic work in our country, attracting not only well-known artists such as Eduardo Chillida, Rafael Canogar, Josep Guinovart or Albert Ráfols-Casamada, but also creators such as José Manuel Broto, Eva Lootz, Soledad Sevilla, Marco Angeles, José María Sicilia, Susana Solano and Jordi Teixidor, among others.

Since 1993, with the collaboration of the Government of the Canary Islands and the City of Tías, Dora Castillo and Jorge Marsá decided to move the space to Lanzarote, with the aim of setting up an engraving workshop open to new artistic possibilities such as the exploration of more ambitious formats and techniques as well as enabling the creators to stay for some time in the new facilities of the Island, as a residence for artists.

In 1994, the good development of this initiative led nine artists to set up the first folder of prints under the title of Malpais: José Manuel Broto, Juan Hernández Pijuán, Cristina Iglesias, Eva Lootz, Juan Muñoz, José María Sicilia, Susana Solano, Jordi Teixidor and Francesc Torres.

This work will be followed by new artistic residences from which will emerge series such as “Los Vientos” by José Manuel Broto in 1995, “Mobiliario” by Juan Muñoz in 1996, “La construcción del paisaje” by Pedro Cabrita Reis, Cristina Iglesias and Susana Solano in 1996, “Del jardín” by José Hernández Pijuán in 1997, “Archipelagos” by Gonzalo González in 1998, “Tras el Umbral” by Jordi Teixidor in 1999 or “Lanzarote” by Miquel Barceló between 1999 and 2002.

Based on the pieces of the artists Juan Muñoz, José Manuel Broto, Cristina Iglesias, Susana Solano, Pedro Cabrita Reis and Gonzalo González, who are in the collections and who are not exhibited in the MIAC, 23 prints have been selected. of these artists, to set up an exhibition called ‘Engraving Online’.

The visit to the exhibition is free and will be exposed throughout the year 2019.
